The third text message urged the girl to "keep this for you and us only. Now promise me".

Defence solicitor Michael Hennessy said the messages were all sent by the man from a locked psychiatric ward in Tallaght hospital. He said the man had been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic and was seriously ill at the time.

The court heard the man suffers from psychiatric difficulties, is still receiving medical treatment and is being cared for by his family.

Mr Hennessy said the man does not remember sending the messages to the young girl.

Judge James McDonnell ordered a pre-sentence report and an updated medical report and adjourned the matter to next February. He also ordered the man to stay away from the injured party.
